Museum Registrar and Assistant Director Clare O'Brien will be honored at this year's Annual Dinner at the Barn Restaurant, Pawlet, on August 6. Clare began her service to the museum back in 1990 when a group of community volunteers decided to create the Slate Valley Museum to preserve the history of the slate industry. She became a founding member of the Board of Directors, serving as Secretary and Membership Chair.
Clare served two consecutive Museum Directors as Assistant Director and Registrar, maintaining meticulous collection records, directing volunteers, managing mailing lists, writing press releases, and performing numerous other tasks in the day-to-day operation of the Museum. Using her retail business experience, she also started the Museum's gift shop.
Clare will continue her dedicated service to the Museum as Board Secretary and Membership Chair, and as a member of the Collections Management Committee. The Museum welcomes all members and friends to join us in thanking Clare for the enormous contribution she makes to the organization.
To make a reservation, please contact Cyndy Warner at 518-642-1342. The cost is $23 per person, including tax and gratuity, payable to the Barn Restaurant the night of dinner.

Museum conservator M.J. Davis, Director of the Vermont Collections Care Program, recently conducted a two-day site visit at the Museum as part of a conservation assessment of the collection. The $3820 project is funded by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) that helps museums lay the groundwork for effective collections care and management.
Working with Museum Registrar, Clare O'Brien, Davis reviewed the overall condition of the museum's collection, the physical storage and exhibition conditions, and the collection management practices. Her comprehensive report will help the Collections Management Committee establish goals so that the collection can be preserved and made available to the public for years to come.
Her preliminary remarks complimented Clare for meticulous record keeping and collection management that will serve subsequent collection initiatives. Working with Collections Management Committee Chair Jon Mathewson, Green Mountain College intern Rob Hayward is currently computerizing collection records using collections management software that the Museum purchased at a substantial discount through the Vermont Museum and Gallery Alliance (VMGA).
