Goodbye Irene! Renovation Celebration
at the Slate Valley Museum
The Slate Valley Museum announces a celebration to thank the many people and organizations who have helped the museum successfully complete its recovery efforts after Hurricane Irene on October 25th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
On August 28th, 2011 the Mettowee River rose over 15 feet, in less than three hours, and flooded the Slate Valley Museum and the surrounding Cultural Campus in over three feet of water. On August 29th, staff members, volunteers, and board members began the long recovery process to save collections and archival material, clean the museum building and grounds, and begin renovation efforts. After a year of hard work and considerable support from the Slate Valley community, the Slate Valley Museum is thrilled to announce a celebration in honor of the completion of renovations and the grand re-opening of the newly restored Cultural Campus!
On October 25th, visitors, supporters, and community members are invited to enjoy an evening of entertainment, food, and fun in celebration of the museum’s completion. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. the museum will be open for visitors to enjoy permanent and temporary exhibits including “Heavy Lifting: A Human and Technological History of Moving Slate from Quarry to Market,” “The Dream and the Reality: Immigration and Assimilation in the Slate Valley of New York and Vermont,” and the Slate Valley Museum’s newest temporary exhibit “Slate Abstracts” by Pennsylvanian photographer, Alyssha Csuk.
Be the first to view a new slate floor installation by stone artisan Jim Morris to celebrate the Slate Valley Museum’s recovery.
During the evening the Slate Valley Museum is happy to offer refreshments and musical entertainment along with slate carving demonstrations by Poultney, Vermont stone artist Kerry O. Furlani and a presentation about SVM’s recovery by Executive Director Kathryn Weller.
Enjoy the newly re-designed Cultural Campus completed through the hard work of Granville’s Department of Public Works and especially by Six Flags Volunteers, employees of The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom, as part Six Flags effort to expand volunteerism into the local communities of their theme parks.
When asked about the event Executive Director Kathryn Weller commented, “We are so happy about the support we received during this past year. It has been a very difficult experience but also one that has reaffirmed our community’s commitment to our museum and shown their high level of support. We appreciate that support and recognize that the many accomplishments we saw this year would not have been possible without the many amazing volunteers, donors, and supporters of the Slate Valley Museum in the Slate Valley.”
